Comment and discuss
last updated at: Jun 8, 2026
Comments let you leave a note on any piece of text in a document. Each comment has its own thread, so collaborators can reply, discuss, and resolve it without touching the document itself.
Add a comment
You need write access to add comments. If you only have view access, the option is not available.
- Select the text you want to comment on.
- Right-click the selection and choose Add comment from the menu.
- In the New comment dialog, the Title is pre-filled with your selected text. You can edit it, or add a longer note in the Description field. Pick a colour if you like.
- Click Add comment.
The selected text is highlighted in the document with the comment's colour, so it's easy to see at a glance which passages have comments.
You can also use the keyboard shortcut Cmd+Option+M (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt+M (Windows) when you have text selected.
Open the comments sidebar
Click the Comments button (the speech bubble icon) in the top-right corner of the toolbar. A number badge shows how many open comments the document has.
The sidebar lists every comment anchored to the document. Click a comment to jump to its location in the text and open the thread.
Filter and find comments
At the top of the sidebar, two controls let you narrow the list:
- All / For you: For you shows only comments where you have been @mentioned in the thread.
- Open / Resolved / All: filters by status. The default is Open.
Reply to a comment
Click a comment in the sidebar (or click its highlighted text in the document) to open the thread. Type your reply in the Reply... box at the bottom and press Enter to send.
To @mention someone, type @ followed by their name. They will appear in the For you tab.
Resolve a comment
When a discussion is done, you can mark it resolved.
- In the sidebar or in the document, right-click the comment and choose Resolve comment.
- Or open the thread and click the checkmark icon at the top right of the dialog.
Resolved comments are still there; switch the sidebar filter to Resolved or All to see them. To reopen one, right-click it and choose Reopen comment, or open the thread and click the circular-arrow icon (Re-open).
Edit or delete a comment
Right-click a comment highlight in the document to open its context menu:
- View comment: opens the thread.
- Comment color: change the highlight colour.
- Resolve comment / Reopen comment: toggle the status.
- Delete comment: removes the comment and its highlight. The thread history is preserved but the comment no longer appears in the document or sidebar.
To edit the title or description of an existing comment, open the thread and click the pencil icon (Edit) near the top.
Copy a link to a comment
Open a comment thread and click the link icon (Copy link) near the top of the dialog. The link goes straight to the document with that comment thread open, so you can share it with a collaborator.
