Freeze rows and columns
last updated at: Jun 8, 2026
Freezing keeps one or more rows or columns pinned to the top or left of the grid while the rest of the sheet scrolls. This is useful when your first row or column contains headers you want to keep in view.
Freeze rows or columns
- Click any cell in the last row or column you want to freeze. For example, to freeze row 1, click any cell in row 1. To freeze column A, click any cell in column A.
- Open the View menu and hover over Freeze.
- Choose what to freeze:
- Freeze to current row freezes the selected row and every row above it.
- Freeze to current column freezes the selected column and every column to its left.
- Freeze to current cell freezes both the selected row and column, and everything above and to the left.
A line appears across the grid to show where the frozen area ends. Rows or columns above that line stay fixed as you scroll.
Move the freeze line by dragging
You can drag the freeze boundary without using the menu. A small handle sits at the edge of the row numbers (for a row freeze) or the column letters (for a column freeze). Drag it to a new position to change how many rows or columns are frozen. Drag it all the way back to remove the freeze for that axis.
Remove a freeze
Open View → Freeze and choose Cancel freezing. This removes all frozen rows and columns on the current sheet.
