Share a file or folder

last updated at: Jun 8, 2026

Everything in Drive is private to you until you share it. You can share a file or folder with specific people, with a whole team, or with anyone who has the link, and decide whether they can view it or also make changes.

Share with specific people

  1. Find the file or folder in Drive.
  2. Right-click it (or open the menu), hover over Share, then click Share in the sub-menu that appears.
  3. In the Share dialog, type a name or email address in the box at the top, then pick the person. They appear under People with access.
  4. Choose what they can do from the dropdown next to their name: Editor (view and make changes) or Viewer (view only). New people are added as Editors.
  5. Click Save.

To remove someone later, open the same dialog, set their dropdown to Remove, and click Save.

Share with a team

If you belong to a team, click Share with team at the bottom of the dialog and pick the team. Everyone in that team gets access.

Under General access, a file starts as Restricted. Only the people you've added can open it.

To share more widely, click the lock icon to switch it to Unrestricted, then choose Can view or Can edit. Use the Copy link button to copy the link and send it to whoever you like.

An Unrestricted link still requires the other person to sign in to Eigen. It isn't open to the public web. There's no anonymous, sign-in-free sharing.

Let people know

In the Share dialog, click the Email collaborators button to open a compose window where you can write a message to everyone you've shared with. Eigen includes a link to the file automatically. The button is disabled while you have unsaved changes, so save first if you've just added someone.

Control who can change sharing

If you own the file, you can stop editors from re-sharing it. In the Share dialog, turn off Editors can share. With it off, only you can add or remove people. Editors can still work on the file, but they can't change who else has access.
