Move email between folders
last updated at: Jun 8, 2026
You can move a message out of the folder it's in and into another one, to keep your Inbox tidy or file something where you'll find it later. There are two ways to do it: drag the message onto a folder, or use the Move to folder menu. Both move the message for good, so it leaves its old folder and appears in the new one.
The folders you can move between are the ones in the sidebar: Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Spam, Trash, and Archive. See Get started with Mail for what each one is for.
Drag a message onto a folder
- Open the folder the message is in, then find it in the message list.
- Click and drag the message towards the sidebar on the left.
- Drop it on the folder you want. The folder highlights while the message is over it, so you can see where it will land.
The message moves straight away. Open the folder you dropped it on to check it's there.
Use the Move to folder menu
- Right-click the message in the list to open its menu.
- Point at Move to folder. A list of folders opens to the side.
- Click the folder you want. The message moves there.
You can do the same with a message you're reading: in the reading pane, open the More actions menu (the ⋮ button) and choose Move to folder.
Move several at once
You don't have to move messages one by one. Select more than one in the list, then drag any of them onto a folder, or right-click and choose Move to folder. They all move together. See Work with several emails at once for how to select a set.
For the folders you reach for most, the toolbar above an open message has shortcuts: Archive files it in Archive, Report Spam sends it to Spam, and Delete sends it to the Trash. See Archive, delete, and report spam.
