Mention someone in a message

last updated at: Jun 8, 2026

An @-mention lets you address a specific person in a message. When you type @, Chat shows a list of the people in the room so you can pick who you mean without typing the full address.

Mention someone

  1. In the message box, type @ followed by the start of a name or email address.
  2. A list of matching room members appears above the message box.
  3. Use the arrow keys to move through the list, then press Enter or Tab to pick someone. You can also click a name in the list.
  4. The person's email address is added to your message, ready for you to continue typing.

Press Escape to close the list without adding a mention.

How it appears in the conversation

When your message is sent, any email address in it is shown as a highlighted name with a hover card. Other people in the room can hover over the name to see who was mentioned and open a mail link to that address.

Who appears in the list

The list shows only the people who are already members of that room. To mention someone who is not a member yet, invite them first using /invite [email], then mention them once they have joined. See Chat commands for details on /invite.
