Mention someone in a message
last updated at: Jun 8, 2026
An @-mention lets you address a specific person in a message. When you type @, Chat shows a list of the
people in the room so you can pick who you mean without typing the full address.
Mention someone
- In the message box, type
@followed by the start of a name or email address. - A list of matching room members appears above the message box.
- Use the arrow keys to move through the list, then press Enter or Tab to pick someone. You can also click a name in the list.
- The person's email address is added to your message, ready for you to continue typing.
Press Escape to close the list without adding a mention.
How it appears in the conversation
When your message is sent, any email address in it is shown as a highlighted name with a hover card. Other people in the room can hover over the name to see who was mentioned and open a mail link to that address.
Who appears in the list
The list shows only the people who are already members of that room. To mention someone who is not a member
yet, invite them first using /invite [email], then mention them once they have joined. See
Chat commands for details on /invite.
