Email or chat with a contact
last updated at: Sep 13, 2026
Contacts can open Mail or Chat for you, so you never have to copy an address across by hand. Both actions work on a single contact or on a whole selection.
Send an email
- Open Contacts and find the person you want to write to.
- Right-click their row, or hover over it and click the ⋮ button.
- Click Send email.
Mail opens a new message with the contact already filled in as the recipient.
You can do the same from a contact's own page. Click the contact to open their details, then use the ⋮ button in the toolbar.
Contacts uses the first email address on the card. If a contact has no email address at all, Send email is not shown.
Start a chat
- Right-click a contact, or open their details and click the ⋮ button in the toolbar.
- Click Start chat.
If you already have a chat with that one person, and you can write in it, that chat opens. Otherwise the New chat dialog opens with the person already added, so you can check the name and where the room is saved before you create it. See Create a chat room for what the dialog does.
Reach several people at once
Select more than one contact first, then right-click one of the selected rows. The two menu items count your selection: Send email to 3 contacts and Start chat with 3 contacts.
- Send email to 3 contacts opens one new message addressed to all of them.
- Start chat with 3 contacts opens the New chat dialog with all of them added, so you get one room with everyone in it.
The number counts the people in your selection who have an email address. See Work with several contacts at once for how to build the selection.
Your own card is left out
Contacts keeps a card for you, linked to your Eigen account. Both actions drop it from the list, because an email or a chat with yourself is not useful. If your own card is the only thing you selected, neither item appears in the menu.
Team members
The same two actions work for the people in your teams. Click a team in the sidebar, click a member to open their details, then use the ⋮ button in the toolbar.
