Add and edit cards

last updated at: Jun 8, 2026

Cards are the individual items on a Stickies board. Each card has a title, an optional description, and a colour. This article covers how to add a new card and how to change a card's content after you've created it.

Add a card

You need write access to the board to add cards. If you can only view the board, the add button does not appear.

  1. Find the column you want to add the card to.
  2. Click Add a sticky at the bottom of the column, or click the + button in the column header.
  3. The Add Sticky dialog opens. Type a title in the Title field. A title is required.
  4. Optionally, add text to the Description field. The description supports formatted text and checklists.
  5. Optionally, pick a colour from the Color row at the bottom of the dialog.
  6. Click Add Sticky. The card appears at the top of the column.

Edit a card

  1. Click the card to open it.
  2. In the card dialog, click the pencil icon (Edit) in the strip below the description.
  3. The Edit card dialog opens with the card's current title, description, and colour filled in.
  4. Change whatever you like, then click Save. Click Cancel to discard your changes.

You can also open the Edit card dialog from the context menu: right-click the card and choose View sticky, then click the pencil icon in the dialog that opens.

Add a checklist

A card's Description can hold a checklist, which is handy for tracking the small steps in a piece of work.

  1. Open the Add Sticky or Edit card dialog and click in the Description field.
  2. Type [] at the start of a line to start a checklist, or select a few lines and click the Checklist button in the editor's toolbar. Each line becomes an item with its own checkbox.
  3. Add as many items as you need, then save the card.

To tick items off, open the card and click a checkbox in the description. A ticked item gets a line through it. You need write access to the board to tick items.

Once a card has a checklist, a small progress bar and a count, such as 1/3, appear on the card so you can see how far along it is at a glance.

Change a card's colour without opening the edit dialog

Right-click a card to open the context menu, then point to Sticky color. A colour swatch appears. Click any colour to apply it straight away.

Undo a change

Press Ctrl+Z (Windows) or Cmd+Z (macOS) to undo the last change to the board. Press Ctrl+Y or Cmd+Shift+Z to redo.

Every card has its own comment thread where you and your team can discuss the work. Click the card to open it and scroll down to the thread. See Discuss a card with comments for details.
