Create a board and add columns

last updated at: Jun 8, 2026

A Stickies board is a kanban board made of columns. You can create as many boards as you like and shape each one with the columns that match your workflow.

Create a new board

  1. Open Stickies.
  2. Click New stickies in the sidebar. A dialog titled New stickies opens.
  3. Type a name for your board in the Stickies name field.
  4. Choose where to save it. By default the board goes into your Drive. Click Change under Location to pick a different folder.
  5. Click Create. The board opens straight away.

You can also create a board from Drive: click New in the Drive toolbar, then choose New stickies from the menu.

What a new board looks like

Every new board starts with three columns: To Do, In Progress, and Done. A welcome card sits in the first column. You can rename the columns, delete them, or add new ones at any time.

Add a column

You need write access to the board to add or change columns.

  1. Open the board.
  2. Click the + (plus) button in the toolbar. The Add Column dialog opens.
  3. Type a name in the Title field.
  4. Click Add Column. The new column appears at the right end of the board.

On a narrow screen the + button is not shown in the toolbar. Open the Edit menu in the toolbar instead and choose Add column.

Rename a column

  1. Find the column you want to rename.
  2. Click the pencil icon in the column header. The Column Settings dialog opens.
  3. Edit the text in the Title field.
  4. Click Save Changes.

Delete a column

Deleting a column also deletes all the cards in it. This cannot be undone.

  1. Click the pencil icon in the column header to open Column Settings.
  2. Click Delete Column. A confirmation dialog appears.
  3. Confirm the deletion.

Deleting a column permanently removes it and every card inside it. If you want to keep the cards, move them to another column first. See Move and reorder cards.

Undo a change

Press Ctrl+Z (Windows) or Cmd+Z (macOS) to undo the last change. Press Ctrl+Y or Cmd+Shift+Z to redo. The toolbar also has undo and redo buttons.
